In a blend of tradition and modern technology, we recently completed a project involving restoring and enhancing nine stained glass panels, each over a century old. This delicate task was undertaken to preserve the stained glass pieces while enhancing their functionality to meet contemporary standards.
The project began with carefully removing the stained glass panels, which had adorned their original setting for over 100 years. Recognising the need to preserve these historical pieces, the panels were meticulously repaired and resized to fit new timber window frames. This was a crucial step in preparing them for their transformation.
To bring the stained glass into the modern age, the restored panels were then expertly sandwiched between two panes of clear glass, creating a triple-glazed unit. This innovative approach serves a dual purpose: it provides enhanced protection for the delicate stained glass and significantly improves thermal and sound insulation performance.
The success of this complex restoration and modernisation project is largely attributed to the expertise of Chris Room, Glass Operative at Fire Glass Midlands, a master in the production and repair of traditional stained glass. His exceptional skills and dedication were instrumental in breathing new life into these historic panels, ensuring they can be admired for many more years.
This project not only preserves the aesthetic and historical value of the stained glass but also demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship can be harmoniously combined with modern technology to meet contemporary needs.
