The glass industry is experiencing an unprecedented shortage of raw materials which is impacting the availability of specific products – in particular wired glass.

What is Georgian Wired Glass?

Georgian Wired Glass is an early form of safety glass, where generic glass is embedded with a wire mesh during production. This mesh helps to hold the glass together in a breakage whilst also helping to increase its fire rating. It is widely accepted as entry-level cuttable wired fire safety glass, offering an economical and reliable solution for use within fire doors, screens and windows.

As building regulations continuously change and concern over Georgian Wired Polished Glass’ safety in the modern world evolves, Fire Glass UK can provide suitable safer alternatives.

What are the alternatives?

We stock a wide range of products, and until such time as the situation improves, we have several alternatives of 30/0 0r 60/0 suitable for a wide range of applications across all three major manufacturer brands, including:

7.2mm Pyroguard C730 and 11mm Pyroguard (Pyroguard Rapide), perfect for indoor and outdoor use. Its large sheet size and double-sided fire resistance can be cut to size, making it a cost-effective solution. With fire classification approved by Certifire and can be installed in fire-tested timber and steel systems.

Pyrobelite 7 and 9EG, manufactured by AGC, is a laminated glass constructed with a clear fire-rated intumescent interlayer, which turns into a rigid and opaque fire shield at around 120ºC. Helping keep flames out and limiting heat transfer to a deficient and safe level, delivering fire protection in both directions according to the standard EN 13501-2.

7mm and 10mm Pyrodur® , manufactured by Pilkington™, is widely used and specified in a range of tested softwood and hardwood timber. It can offer fire ratings of up to 60 minutes of integrity. In the event of a fire, it turns opaque, providing the integrity requirements of a barrier to hot gases and flames and complying with British, European and ISO test standards.
