SHIFTING WORK PATTERNS
Apr
2021

Fire Glass UK has recently seen rapid growth at our Midlands and North branches, which in turn has lead to expanding its workforce to manage supply and demand.

Fire Glass Midlands and Fire Glass North have both introduced shift work to be able to manage customer orders. This means we have the opportunity to take on more employees in the factory to help us with our smooth transition.

Sam Hawthorne, Operations Manager at Fire Glass Midlands said “Fire Glass Midlands has a dedicated despatch team that eagerly await vehicles to return each day to enable them to reload for the next day’s deliveries. We have also opened up capacity on our toughening plant and cutting table. We now operate our toughening plant from 06.00am – 11.00pm to allow us to double our capacity due to increase in customer demand.

As a result, we are now looking for extra staff for our night shift to further increase our capacity and allow us to keep on top of our production levels, therefore, permitting us to keep to our lead times and avoid any customer delays.

Since the introduction of our night shift, we have seen our On Time In Full (OTIF) score drastically improve and for the last two months, we have hit our target of 95%. Customer satisfaction is a high priority at Fire Glass UK and we hope that this will continue to prove beneficial to both our staff and customers.

Long term, we expect to mirror our day shift staffing levels on our night shift which will allow us to grow further and manufacture more efficiently.

An evening shift is also being introduced at Fire Glass North, which is planned to start imminently. Increased demand in the first quarter of 2021 has enabled the branch to be able to implement this.

Jonathon Booth, Operations Manager for Fire Glass North said “The evening shift will ultimately give the branch more capacity in all production areas and allow us to offer a better service to our customers in the North, meaning customers will have greater flexibility and benefit from improved lead times.

Presently, we have 4 employees working the evening shift, with plans to expand this number over the rest of this year to replicate the day shift which currently has 14 employees”.“.

These are exciting times for both branches, which has only been made possible from the hard work and dedication of our existing teams.
