As part of Fire Door Safety Week, Jade Lashford, Estimating Manager at Fire Glass, was recently joined by specialist steel door manufacturer iSteel for a video interview exploring fire-resistant glass and its role within the company’s distinctive glazed fire door systems.

The interview provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of selecting the correct fire-resistant glass and why every component must work together to achieve the required level of protection.

Introducing iSteel

Based in Yorkshire, iSteel is a UK manufacturer, supplier and installer of bespoke internal and fire-rated steel glazed doors and partitions.

Its products are handcrafted in the UK and combine slim steel profiles and contemporary design with tested fire performance – demonstrating that safety and aesthetics do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Understanding the E30 Fire-Rated Door

During the interview, Jade discussed the specialist glass used within iSteel’s E30 fire-rated door and some of the technical considerations involved in specifying glass for fire-resistant applications.

An E30 classification means that the complete door system has been tested to provide 30 minutes of integrity, helping to prevent the passage of flames and hot gases for the stated period.

The Firesafe range, with its E30 rating, complements a slim-line system starting at just 6mm thick. The toughened fire-rated glass is well-suited to domestic properties.

Crucially, fire-resistant glass does not provide protection by itself. Its performance depends on it being installed as part of an appropriately tested and approved glazing system incorporating the correct frame, seals, glazing materials, fixings and hardware.

Substituting or changing an individual component without suitable supporting evidence could affect the performance and certification of the complete system.

What Makes the iSteel Door Different?

One of the defining features of iSteel’s E30 fire-rated door is its distinctive lock box detail.

iSteel owns the certification for this particular design, enabling the company to offer a tested and certified slim steel glazed fire-rated door incorporating a lock box in this distinctive style.

The detail allows the door to retain its refined, slim-profile appearance while delivering the required level of tested fire performance.

The interview reinforces one of the central messages of Fire Door Safety Week: a fire door is a complete life-safety system, and every component has an important role to play.

From the door and frame to the glass, seals, glazing materials and ironmongery, each element must be correctly specified, installed and maintained.
